Introduction to Portuguese Knitting
with Marianne Hurley
Sunday, October 4 | 9:00 - 12:00
In this workshop, knitters will learn how to tension yarn in the Portuguese style, how to knit and purl, increase and decrease, and cast-on and bind-off in the Portuguese style.
Portuguese Knitting is ergonomically efficient and is gentle on the hands and wrists unless the knitter has arthritis in their left thumb, in which case it will cause discomfort and is not recommended.
SKILL LEVEL: This workshop is appropriate for intermediate and experienced knitters, those who already understand knitting basics.
WHAT TO BRING: For this short narrow scarf project, approximately 4" wide and 40" long, I am offering two options, each using worsted weight yarn:
1) a ten-stitch lace center panel that uses 75-100 yards
2) a simple stockinette version that uses 200-300 yards
Students should select needles (8-12" straight needles or 16-18" circulars) to give them a loose, drapey fabric at about 16-18 sts over 4" (4-4.5 sts/inch) for either scarf; 2 stitch markers (optional).
MATERIALS PROVIDED: An illustrated Portuguese Knitting Handbook and 2 Portuguese knitting pins.
MATERIALS FEE: $20 payable to the instructor.

I am the daughter of Portuguese immigrants and learned to knit from my mother and grandmother. I love sharing my knitting heritage! I have taught Portuguese Knitting, continental style knitting (picking) and English style knitting (throwing) for over 40 years and I love teaching. I have been knitting for over 70 years - since I was 5!
