Navajo Hand Spinning
with TahNibaa Naataanii
The introductory course will teach each student how to spin wool the Navajo way, using a Navajo lap spindle. Students will have a demonstration and instructions on how to card wool using hand carders. Students will learn how to spin wool using the “S” and “Z” twist methods and the Navajo 3-ply method. Throughout the class, discussions on what can be created using hand spun wool will be shared and personal stories of the Naataanii family. Instructor will provide the tools and materials for this class.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner to Advanced
WHAT TO BRING: Apron and hand carders (optional).
MATERIALS INCLUDED: Navajo spindle, washed fleece, clean/carded wool.
MATERIALS FEE: $110 payable to the instructor.

Meet your instructor…
We are honored to have TahNibaa join us to share her passion for traditional weaving incorporating her personal creative flair. She uses both traditional and non-traditional colors and raises her own sheep, which she shears to create the dyed yarn used in her art. She is a recipient of a 2022 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the United States government's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.
