Portuguese Knitting: Section 2
with Marianne Hurley
Saturday, October 3 | 9:00 - 5:00
In the first half of this workshop, knitters will learn how to tension yarn in the Portuguese style, how to knit and purl, increase and decrease, and cast-on and bind-off in the Portuguese style.
In the second half of the workshop, knitters will learn how to apply Portuguese Knitting techniques to knitting in the round, lace knitting, color work, textured knitting, cables, double-knitting, etc.
Knitters will also learn how to work inside out in the round to take advantage of the ease and speed of the purl stitch in the Portuguese Knitting style.
This sheep-themed stranded color work hat has approximately a 20-22" circumference.
Portuguese Knitting is ergonomically efficient and is gentle on the hands and wrists unless the knitter has arthritis in their left thumb, in which case it will cause discomfort and is not recommended.
SKILL LEVEL: This workshop is appropriate for intermediate and experienced knitters, those who already understand knitting basics.
WHAT TO BRING: Students will need two strongly contrasting colors, in worsted weight yarn, approximately 150-200 yards each: 1 color for the sheep; 1 one for the background. This can be a fun project with wildly unusual sheep colors!
Students should select needles (16" circulars and/or dpn's) to give them a softly firm hat fabric at about 20-22 sts over 4" (5-5.5sts/inch); 6 stitch markers with 1 additional EOR marker.
MATERIALS INCLUDED: An illustrated Portuguese Knitting Handbook and 2 Portuguese knitting pins.
MATERIALS FEE: $20 payable to the instructor.

Meet your instructor…
I am the daughter of Portuguese immigrants and learned to knit from my mother and grandmother. I love sharing my knitting heritage! I have taught Portuguese Knitting, continental style knitting (picking) and English style knitting (throwing) for over 40 years and I love teaching. I have been knitting for over 70 years - since I was 5!
